Meet Dr. Cynthia Bonafield

Being an orthodontist is a very rewarding profession. Taking care of my patients over the course of several months has taught me patience and kindness. Helping someone achieve their best smile is my legacy.

I want you to know I will always hear and respect your concerns, not just at the beginning of your orthodontic care but throughout treatment. I am here to make sure you get your best smile!

Education and Experience

As of May 24, 2022, I will have been in practice 29 years. I decided to be a dental hygienist when I was in the 8th grade. I had just completed my orthodontic treatment that year and there was a career day at school: I talked with a dental hygienist at that event and decided that is what I wanted to do.

During my dental hygiene training, I obtained a part-time job working for an orthodontist. I realized that the specialty of orthodontics was what I really enjoyed, so I decided to continue my education and pursue my dream to do what I loved!

My credentials include:

  • Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene
  • Doctorate of Dental Surgery
  • Master of Science in Orthodontics

In the years I have been practicing, orthodontics just keeps getting better and better. Research has lead to new digital technology, as well as changes in treatment planning, materials, and methodologies. I really enjoy learning about these new options and bringing the best into my practice to improve the treatment experience and results.

I am an active member of the:

  • American Association of Orthodontists
  • Southern Association of Orthodontists
  • West Virginia Orthodontic Association
  • American Dental Association
  • West Virginia Dental Association
  • Monongahela Valley Dental Society

These professional organizations offer numerous opportunities for learning. In addition to annual meetings, they offer seminars, lectures, publications, and online classes. I make the most of these offerings, to stay at the forefront of the latest advances.

Beyond the Practice

I grew up in Morgantown and met my husband, Michael Mazelon, while we were at WVU. We have been married for 27 years and have three wonderful children — Nicholas, Leah, and Natalie — who are the light of our lives. Our family also includes two beautiful English Setters named Maggie and Judy, and a calico cat called Meow.

Since Michael and I met at WVU, we love to attend Mountaineer football and basketball games. I am a big sports fan and season ticket holder. We also enjoy traveling, as well as kayaking and biking in this beautiful state of West Virginia!

At home, I like gardening, going to farmers markets, watching cooking shows, and trying new recipes. I am at my happiest when my college-age kids are home for Sunday pasta dinner!

In the Community

I belong to Rotary Club and participate in various community activities. I also support the United Way of Marion County, Marion County Chamber of Commerce, Fly the Flag project, Fairmont Rotary Scholarships, and Rotary Youth Leadership. Supporting our community, especially our youth, is vital to our future.

My family and I are members of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fairmont.
